Monrovia Canyon Park

Monrovia Canyon Park

Monrovia Canyon Park

1200 N. Canyon Blvd., Monrovia, California 91016

Monrovia Canyon Park sits in the foothills above Monrovia, tucked into the San Gabriel Mountains and just a short drive from the Los Angeles sprawl. This 80-acre park has been around since 1911, and it’s genuinely one of the nicest spots in LA County if you want to get away from the city noise without driving too far.

The trails here wind through real wilderness—chaparral, oak trees, and canyon views that feel properly remote even though you’re still close to town. Water flows through the canyon in winter and early spring, which makes the hikes especially refreshing then. The main trail follows Monrovia Canyon Creek, so there’s always something interesting to look at beyond just the usual hillside scrub.

Dogs are welcome on leash throughout the park, which means you and your dog can actually explore the better trails instead of being stuck on a loop near the parking area. The terrain is varied enough to keep things interesting—some sections are fairly gentle, while others get rockier and more technical if you want more of a challenge. The elevation gain is manageable too, making it accessible even if your dog isn’t a marathon runner.

Parking is at the bottom, and from there you’re immediately on trail. The crowds thin out pretty quickly once you head past the picnic areas, so even on weekends you’ll find quiet stretches. Summer gets hot in the exposed sections, so an early morning or late afternoon visit works better then. The canyon provides some natural shade, but bring water for both you and your dog—there’s no guarantee about water availability along the trails themselves.

The park closes at sunset, so plan your timing accordingly. It’s the kind of place where you can spend anywhere from an hour to half a day depending on how far you want to go and how much time you want to spend just sitting and listening to the creek.
