Discover the dog-friendly Olmstead Loop Trail in El Dorado County, offering scenic views of rolling hills, oak trees and wildflowers in spring. At 8.6 miles and rated easy to moderate, the trail’s terrain is suited for most hikers and is open to mountain bikers and equestrians as well.
Side trails on the canyon offer panoramic views of the North Fork American River and the Auburn Dam construction site. Trail markers have been posted about every half-mile and at most trail intersections. There is a strictly enforced leash law for dogs on the trail.
The trailhead and parking are located behind the fire station in Cool. To get there, take Highway 49 south to Cool and turn right just before the fire station and blinking red light. This is also the staging area for equestrians. Trailhead is on the south end of the parking area.
