Pedro Point Headlands

Old Pacific Coast Highway Trail, Pacifica, California 94044

(650) 359-3275

Pedro Point Headlands is a spectacular 246-acre preserve of dog-friendly wildlands tucked between Pacifica and Devil’s Slide on the San Francisco Peninsula. Managed by the Pacifica Land Trust, this stunning coastal hiking destination offers sweeping ocean views, dramatic headland cliffs, native wildflowers, and refreshing sea breezes. Dogs are welcome on all trails but must be kept on leash at all times.

The highlight of the preserve is the Bluff Trail, which delivers some of the most breathtaking coastal scenery in the Bay Area. From the trail, you and your dog can take in panoramic views of the headland cliffs, San Pedro Rock, Devil’s Slide, and the vast Pacific coastline. On clear days, the views extend as far north as Mount Tamalpais and Point Reyes, creating a spectacular backdrop for your hike. The moderate 2.3-mile loop covers most of the preserve’s features and trails, making it a manageable and rewarding outing for dogs of all fitness levels.

For the more adventurous, San Pedro Rock itself can be reached at very low tide via a hike from Linda Mar Beach, though this route requires careful timing and attention to tide charts. The main trail network, however, is accessible year-round and offers plenty of variety and visual interest to keep both you and your dog engaged throughout the hike.

Access to Pedro Point Headlands is best from Highway 1, at the end of the paved trail just north of the northernmost Devil’s Slide parking lot. There are approximately a dozen parking spaces available at the trailhead. The Ace Trail connects to the Pedro Point Loop and provides an alternative route into the preserve, though hikers should be aware that this trail can become very muddy and slippery after recent rainfall. It is a good idea to wait a day or two after rain to allow the trails to dry out for a safer and more enjoyable experience. Poison oak grows alongside portions of the trail, so keep your dog close and stay on the path. Some sections approach the edge of cliffs, so caution and attentiveness are essential, particularly with an excited dog on leash.

Pedro Point Headlands is a perfect destination for an active day out with your dog on the Pacifica coast. The combination of ocean views, coastal wildflowers, dramatic geology, and fresh sea air makes this one of the most scenic on-leash hikes in San Mateo County. Pair your hike with a stop at nearby Soul Grind Coffee Roasters or a walk along Pacifica State Beach for a full day of dog-friendly coastal adventure. With a 4.8-star Google rating from visitors, this preserve consistently delights hikers and their dogs alike.
