Pinnacles Trail

Highway 173, Lake Arrowhead, California

Pinnacles Trail in Big Bar, San Bernardino County, delivers what you’d hope for in a high-desert hike—actual views and a route that doesn’t feel like a tourist trap. The trailhead sits at the entrance to the Rifle Range on Highway 173, just north of Rock Camp, which makes it straightforward to find without much fussing around.

The climb to the peak rewards you with views across the Mojave Desert on clear days, which beats staring at chaparral for hours. The path itself is well-marked with steel posts and rock cairns guiding you through pretty varied terrain—you’re not just grinding up a featureless slope. The mix of navigation markers means you can actually pay attention to your surroundings instead of constantly checking whether you’re still on route.

Dogs handle this hike reasonably well. The terrain isn’t technical enough to shred paw pads, and the elevation gain is real but not brutal. You’ll want to bring water since the high desert doesn’t offer much shade, and the exposed sections get hot fast. The path stays on the ground; there’s nothing scrambling-heavy that would make a less agile dog nervous.

The time you pick matters here. Early morning or late afternoon works better than midday, especially in summer when the sun reflects off the light-colored rock and amplifies the heat. Spring is honestly ideal if you can time it—wildflowers scattered along the trail, the air isn’t yet oppressive, and you won’t be sharing the path with as many people.

The San Bernardino National Forest website has current trail condition reports if you want to check before heading out, which is worth doing since weather can shift quickly in the high country. Come prepared for sun exposure and you’ll have a genuinely solid day in the desert.
