Silver Lake East sits at 7,200 feet elevation on the north end of Silver Lake, about 50 miles east of Jackson. The campground is right at the base of Carson Peak, so you get that dramatic backdrop while you’re setting up camp. It’s a real high-country spot—you’ll notice the air feels different up here, and the lake stays pretty cold year-round.
The main draw is direct access to the water and trails. Numerous paths leave the campground and connect down to Silver Lake itself, plus there are designated swimming beaches if your dog wants to cool off. The fishing is solid too, and boating is popular with the crowds that come through. If you want to explore beyond the immediate lake area, Silver Lake West is just across Highway 88 and has additional trails plus access to the Silver Fork of the American River for a different kind of water experience.
Facilities here are basic but functional. You’ve got vault toilets, drinking water, campfire rings, and picnic tables at each site. Some sites include bear-proof food storage containers, which is important in this area—store everything properly or you’ll have trouble. The campground has a size limit of 2 vehicles and 6 people per site, so it’s not set up for huge groups.
A nearby lodge handles the extras you might need. They run a boat rental and boat ramp if you didn’t bring your own watercraft, plus there’s a restaurant there. There’s also a pay phone at the lodge if you need to make calls. The elevation and location make this feel like a genuine mountain getaway rather than a roadside stop, and your dog will get plenty of activity between the trails and lake access.
