The Bark Park

The Bark Park

3839 Bradshaw Rd., Sacramento, California 95827

Located in front of the Sacramento County Animal Care Shelter, The Bark Park dog park spans two acres with separate areas for large and small dogs. It’s one of the first municipal shelters in the nation to have a dedicated dog park on-site, built with grant funding from the County Department of Regional Parks. The park was created to encourage dog owners to follow Sacramento’s leash laws while still giving dogs a legitimate place to run off-leash, exercise, and socialize with other dogs and their owners.

The setup is straightforward and practical. Doggy drinking fountains are available throughout the park, which is helpful on warmer days. The separate sections for different dog sizes mean smaller dogs won’t get overwhelmed by larger ones, and older or less social dogs have a better chance of finding compatible playmates. You’ll see a real mix of dogs here—everything from senior rescues to high-energy young dogs.

Before your first visit, make sure your dog has a current county or city license and has been spayed or neutered. There are a few rules to follow: no choke or prong collars, no food or treats inside the park (this keeps things focused on play and prevents resource guarding), and no smoking. Dogs need to be leashed when entering and leaving the park, and you’ll need to be an adult over 18 to supervise. Standard expectations apply—pick up after your dog and keep an eye on them the entire time.

The location right at the animal shelter is convenient if you’re in the area for other reasons, and it’s become a genuine community spot where Sacramento dog owners connect. The two-acre space feels substantial enough that dogs get real room to run without feeling cramped, even when it’s moderately busy.
