Western States Pioneer Express Recreation Trail

At just under 9 miles round trip, the Western States Pioneer Express Recreation Trail is a dog-friendly out-and-back trail near Auburn in Placer County. The trail is popular with hikers, bikers and horseback riders.

The moderately difficult hike boasts stunning views of the Middle Fork American River Canyon, a waterfall and Mountain Quarries Railroad Bridge, built in 1912. The bridge is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Dogs are permitted on leash on the Western States Pioneer Express Recreation Trail.
