The Westport Headlands Trail area is a community gathering spot with a rich history that you’ll notice the moment you arrive. In the past, this spot served as a ship landing, and if you look carefully along the rocky coastline, you can spot remnants of that maritime heritage scattered across the cove.
The main appeal here is how much you can pack into a visit. There’s a sturdy stairway leading down to the rocky cove beach below the headlands, which is perfect for exploring tide pools and hunting for shells. The overlooks are excellent for whale watching during migration season and spotting seabirds year-round. If you’re into fishing or kayaking, the protected cove offers decent opportunities for both. Your dog will enjoy the children’s natural play area on the bluffs, which has plenty of room to walk around, though they need to stay leashed.
The site features several picnic areas scattered across the headlands, making it easy to settle in for lunch with an ocean view. Late summer brings wild blackberries along some of the pathways—a nice bonus if you time your visit right. The path is relatively easy walking, without steep grades or technical terrain.
Parking is straightforward with street parking available and a dedicated ADA parking area with platform access for those who need it. The Westport Village Society manages the property and keeps things accessible and well-maintained. Since it’s a working coastal area, conditions can change with the weather, so checking conditions before you head out makes sense, especially if you’re planning to venture down to the beach or explore tide pools. The combination of hiking, beach access, and potential wildlife viewing makes this a solid stop if you’re traveling the Mendocino Coast with your dog.
