Stanford Inn is a standout in the dog-friendly world not simply because it was one of the first in California to roll out the red carpet for pets. It was also one of the first to adopt sustainable practices, helping to kick off the “green” revolution that resonates today. And it might just be the only vegan resort in the nation. If you’re an omnivore, don’t be put off, be adventurous! What you’ll sample at The Ravens, the inn’s acclaimed restaurant, will turn your head and your mind. It starts with a cooked-to-order, plant-based breakfast (included in the rates).

Menu options range from chickpea crepes with cashew cheese sauce to portabello benedict, breakfast burritos and many other Mexican-inspired dishes. For those with a sweet tooth, cinnamon swirl bread or buckwheat and oat pancakes and waffles are sure to satisfy. A signature brunch dish is composed of grilled herbed polenta with garden greens sautéed in a house braising sauce and served with cashew cream. And here’s the kicker: While dogs by law are not allowed in the dining room, they’re welcome to lounge by your side at tables in the lobby where you will be served just as graciously as on the other side of the restaurant door.

And don’t skip lunch or dinner. The Ravens prides itself on organic cuisine conscientiously prepared and created with an ethically and environmentally sustainable ethos. Much of it is grown in the certified organic gardens right outside the door. You can even get a takeout lunch to enjoy on the trail when you take off hiking with your pup. Given the inn philosophy, you can bet that it will be handed over in compostable packaging and with compostable utensils.

Wednesdays at the inn are Ethnic Inspirations nights with a changing menu themed to different cultural dishes. And yes, there’s a happy hour featuring half-off cocktails, beer, wine and appetizers.
