New year’s eve festivities can be great fun for us but not much for your dog. Here are a few tips to keep your dog safe and sound.

People will likely be coming in and out of the house if you’re having a party. Consider putting your dog in a safe place, like a bedroom, with music and a toy to play with. You can certainly bring them out for a visit with everyone. Just make sure the outside door is closed when you do. Ask your guests not to share treats and drinks; they could harm your dog. And keep an eye out. We know how sneaky they can be when it comes to stealing treats!

Of course, not everyone celebrates with a big party. You can still make the night special for your pup by doing something fun with them! Take a long walk together and watch the fireworks, or cuddle up on the couch and watch a movie. Set aside some extra time to hang out and enjoy each other’s company.

Some dogs are scared of noisemakers and fireworks, while others take them in stride. If your dog is scared, turn up the music a little as it gets closer to midnight. If your dog is terrified, talk to your vet and see if they have any helpful recommendations. Whatever you do, don’t let the dog out when fireworks, gunshots and noisemakers are likely! Scared dogs will run and run and run away. This is a time when many dogs are lost. Don’t let that happen to you!

If you plan to travel with your dog for the festivities, bring all their favorite things—toys, food, treats, etc. Ensure they’re safe and secure in the car, so they don’t leap out. Don’t forget their favorite comfy blanket and a few treats for the ride!

Finally, bring water if you decide to take your pup with you for festivities outside of the home. Make sure that all the loud noises and unfamiliar people don’t overwhelm them, and make sure to take plenty of breaks for your pup, especially if it’s a long outing.

When the festivities are over, cuddle your dog and wish them a Happy New Year! You’ll get dog kisses and love the whole year.
