DogTrekkers in the know already have San Diego's famous Dog Beach on their destination list. Now, if you time it right, you can add a new dimension to your water adventures with your best friend, because the SoCal Surf Dog Club is offering surfing and paddleboarding classes for dogs for five weekend days this summer. Enrollment is limited so everyone gets plenty of attention—and you can feel extra good about this because all the proceeds go to the Helen Woodward Animal Center, which is currently finding loving homes for 3,000 dogs and cats each year. Then, on September 13, you'll be all set to put those skills on view at the 10th Annual Surf-a-Thon Surf Dog Competition, also benefiting the Animal Center.
Helping the local community and its animals for 40 years, the private, no-kill Animal Center offers humane education programs, therapeutic riding sessions and more on its spacious 12-acre facility in Rancho Santa Fe. Its free workshops on "The Business of Saving Lives" have helped animal welfare staff and volunteers in over 40 states and 17 countries, covering everything from humane education to public relations to help organizations run as life-saving businesses.
Among the Center's current hopefuls is Cabo here, who's totally ready for summer fun. This little terrier-Chi mix has some cool dance moves and will be glad to show them off for you at beach parties; in quieter moments, he loves to snuggle. (His lucky adopter also gets two passes to Sea World!) If you're looking for the perfect happy-go-lucky companion, look no further—he's waiting for you right here!
