Let Sleeping Dogs Lie

A destination as diverse as Napa County deserves an overnight stay, and there’s no need to leave Bella home no matter what your budget. Whether you lodge at a luxury property (think five-star Bardessono, Solage, Calistoga Ranch or Carneros Inn) or make a short commute from an affordably priced chain property on the outskirts of the valley (such as Holiday Inn Express & Suites in American Canyon), you won’t have any trouble finding a place where you and your furry friend can share a room.

If you’re a fan of B&Bs, Beazley House in Napa has long been a DogTrekker favorite, and The Inn on First welcomes dogs in three garden suites with enclosed patios perfect for when your dog needs a break in the middle of the night. (It also has an outdoor shower station for four-legged guests!)

More secluded is the six-room Hillcrest Country Inn in Calistoga, offering 40 scenic acres where the two of you can romp to your hearts’ content. To top it off, a guest-friendly kitchen/barbecue area offers an economic alternative to eating out. Meadowlark Country House, also in Calistoga, is another “leash optional” retreat that also happens to offer a clothing-optional sauna and pool for humans.

In the boutique hotel category, Napa River Inn in the Historic Napa Mill complex on the river walk in downtown Napa, within walking distance of dozens of restaurants and tasting rooms, is hard to beat. On the other side of downtown, across from the terminal for the Napa Valley Wine Train, the Westin Verasa accepts only small dogs (under 40 pounds) but pampers them with signature “Heavenly Beds” and other amenities. Embassy Suites Napa Valley, a short distance away, is a comfortable, Mediterranean-themed hotel with all-suite accommodations and a welcoming policy toward pets.
