Mushrooms, ticks and foxtails, oh my!

A vibrant dog park bathed in sunlight features abundant greenery with mature trees, offering ample shade for leisurely outdoor activities. In the distance is a well-equipped playground that presents an additional activity area. An inviting picnic table spreads out nearby, ideal for enjoying meals al fresco or taking relaxing breaks from play. A neatly-placed trash bin aids in maintaining the park's cleanliness for everyone's enjoyment. Dominating the scene is a generously wide dirt path gracefully curving through the expanse of grass, promising exploratory walks and lively fetch games.

Spring hiking with dog

April showers bring spring flowers, and a new round of wild mushrooms. Please be mindful of mushrooms in your yards, parks or anywhere outside your dogs play. There are some steps you can take to lower the chance of your pup getting ahold of a deadly mushroom.

Other dangers to be aware of as you and your dog head out this season for fun and exercise include foxtails and ticks. Check dogs for ticks after hikes and be aware of your “super sniffer” dogs; foxtail grass grows in open spaces as well as along many trails. These ubiquitous seemingly innocent pieces of mother nature can be very dangerous to our dogs.

Staying on paved or cleared trails and not letting your dog off leash can be a good idea to limit the exposure of all three off these dangerous irritants.
