When exploring Bishop with your dog, Love Bishop, Leave Only Paw Prints® to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all. Keep your pup leashed when required on trails and in public spaces and always clean up after them. Carry plenty of water, especially in warmer months, and be mindful of wildlife and rugged terrain. Respect posted guidelines at parks and lodgings to help preserve Bishop’s welcoming, dog-friendly environment for future visitors.
The region’s land stewards and hospitality industry kindly ask all visitors to tread lightly and safely, especially when adventuring with your beloved pups. (FYI land stewards include the Los Angeles Department of Water & Power, which manages most of the public land in the Owens Valley.) Follow these tips to protect both your pup and the environment.
Footwear for the win: Outfit your pup with dog booties for day hikes and protect their feet from hot pavement. Tailwaggers has a great selection if you need to buy a pair.
Be water safe: Spring runoff in the High Sierra flows strong, so you’ll need to be mindful of your dog around rivers and keep them on leash. Exercise caution crossing streams at higher altitudes. If you’re casting a line in the Owens River, it has a fast current so be careful.
Love Bishop, Leave Only Paw Prints®: Protect the natural habitat. Stay on established trails. Pack out what you pack in on the trails, keep your pups away from wildlife and always pick-up poop!
Summer heat warning: Summer temperatures reach 100 some days, so never leave your furry friend in the car unattended. Avoid strenuous activities during peak afternoon sunshine. And pack plenty of water on your expeditions.
