Perk up at a park

Sacramento enjoys a mild fall and winter climate perfect for outings with your pup. If you’re a visitor and weather permits, start your explorations at the navel of California political activity, the state Capitol. No, you can’t go inside—but the two of you can explore Capitol Park, a 40-acre urban preserve surrounding the imposing domed structure. Hundreds of labeled plants from around the world make this park a garden enthusiast’s delight, while somber memorials recall sacrifices made in war.

Not far from downtown, three parks in leafy, early 20th Century neighborhoods also merit exploration with Fido. McKinley Park in East Sacramento is a 32-acre preserve with duck pond, rose garden and a perimeter walking trail, while Curtis Park has a perimeter track, a playground for the kids and lots of grassy space. The city's best known urban green space is William Land Park, a 166-acre source of urban pride with fishing ponds, squirrels galore and many dog-friendly points of interest. Domesticated canines aren’t allowed at the zoo, but hang onto your leash when you're walking outside the fence and an unseen lion lets out a roar.

Longing to unclip and let Rover romp free? Sacramento’s many fenced dog parks let you do just that. Our favorite: Partner Park, 2.5 acres of shaded, hilly terrain at the corner of South Land Park Drive and Fruitridge Boulevard.
