Both you and your four-legged friend will be panting to go when you spy Limantour Beach, a two-mile, wave-washed spit of sand named for a French trader whose schooner was wrecked here in 1841. The cargo he spilled is long gone, but treasure remains for all to enjoy in the form of crashing waves, bountiful shorebirds, ducks, harbor seals and passing gray whales. Leash up and stay on the southeast end of the strand to comply with regulations concerning pets. Don’t forget to pack fresh water for Fido, along with a brush and a towel to help keep the beach where it belongs. Before you hit the sand, swing by Point Reyes Station to pick up some picnic fixin’s at the iconic Cowgirl Creamery. Get oriented and nab a map at the Point Reyes National Seashore visitor center, and you’re ready to go. Want to really get away from it all? Head to the northern reaches of the national seashore and spend some time on the golden sands of Kehoe Beach, which requires a half-mile hike-in over the dunes.
