At Santa Cruz SPCA, it's all about creative community partnerships. Like when the local Anthropologie hosted adoptable dogs in a fashionable setting. Or the dog-friendly Jerk House offering a day of Jamaican cuisine and fun activities for people and dogs at the restaurant, then donating 10 percent of the proceeds to SCSPCA.

One of the coolest projects to come along lately is SCSPCA's collaboration with UnChained, a local nonprofit offering support to at-risk youth in the area. Last summer, SCSPCA's collaboration with UnChained, a local nonprofit offering support to at-risk youth in the area. Last summer, kids and teens met at the Youth Now student center to learn about caring for and training dogs — specifically, rambunctious brother and sister Loulou and Obi, who were happy, playful, and clueless about the most basic training essentials. Using patience, clickers and positive reinforcement, students soon had the two sibs sitting, staying, navigating agility equipment, and more. It was a proud moment for kids and dogs alike when Loulou and Obi aced their evaluations and quickly landed in loving homes. Since then the program has moved to the Santa Cruz County Juvenile Hall facility, where classes are ongoing.

Teams are now forming on the SCSPCA contingent in May 13's Human Race in Santa Cruz's West Side. It's the year's epic fundraiser, with games, entertainment, food and a beautiful walk down West Cliff Drive. Funds raised by the SPCASC teams will help the area's animals who find themselves in trouble, and help the people who love them keep them happy and safe.
