Surf City Usa, gateway to the OC

By: DogTrekker Staff

If you’re lucky enough to be visiting Huntington Beach with your pooch, you might be inclined to get comfortable and not leave the city. After all, when it comes to pup-friendly restaurants, services and a dazzling Dog Beach, Surf City has you spoiled. But try not to get lulled into the local beach vibe too much. Orange County has plenty more for you and your four-legged friend to explore. Here is a local road trip that’s sure to please.

The pretty city of Brea, located just down the 57 freeway, recently created the “Wildcatters Dog Park” on Santa Fe Road at the corner of Valencia Avenue. It’s split into two separate areas, one dedicated to smaller dogs weighing less than 25 pounds, the other for for larger visitors. The drinking fountains are equipped with dog bowls, of course, and there are pretty shade trees and benches for you to relax while your hound romps.

After taking your run or walk, there are many dog friendly places to dine in Brea. Some favorites include Jimmy’s Famous American Tavern, Choice Burgers, Bruxie, Green Tomato Grill and Coastal Grill.

Then, after your meal, if you’re both up for another little hike, I would highly recommend Carbon Canyon Regional Park at 4442 Carbon Canyon Road. It’s a beautiful, historic and sprawling place that’s easy on the feet and legs and also features a rare redwood forest, featuring some trees over 100 feet tall. The green grassy fields seem endless and the trails are interesting, scenic and well laid out.

Then, in a little over a half an hour, you can be back in Huntington Beach all ready to rest up for a good night's sleep and another adventure the next day. Again, there is no lack of interesting things to do with your dog in Huntington Beach. But Orange County is a diverse and scenic place that you could spend years getting to know without even scratching the surface. So roam, romp and explore in the OC using Huntington Beach as your base.
