There’s an undeniable charm to Bishop. From its welcoming community and unhurried pace to the sweeping mountain vistas that surround it, this high desert gem offers an atmosphere of genuine warmth—welcoming both people and their canine companions.

Thoughtfully designed with pet lovers in mind, Bishop features a centrally located dog park, dog-friendly dining patios and a character-rich, walkable downtown that’s always calling for leisurely exploration.

From the moment you arrive, you’ll be ensconced in a community that cherishes the bonds between humans and their dogs. That’s why our DogTrekker community keeps coming back to this beloved Sierra escape. Let’s get you oriented!

The lay of the land: Part of Inyo County, Bishop is the largest city on a road that’s blissfully less traveled, Scenic Byway US-395 that traces California’s mountainous eastern backbone. This “Small City with a Big Backyard” sits north of expansive Death Valley National Park, with Mammoth Lakes and Yosemite National Park to the north.

Puppy love: The dog-friendly options are endless, so you and your traveling companions will always feel right at home. The dog-friendly hotels and restaurants are concentrated in the walkable western town center. There’s a dedicated dog park right in town with grassy areas, shade structures and water stations.

Many trails allow your pup to frolic off-leash—of course, under strict voice command to be a responsible DogTrekker. When snacks and clean-up are in order, hit Tailwaggers, a pet store, self-service dog wash and bakery.

Ways to play: Fishing, hiking, backpacking, biking, rock climbing, golfing and scenic driving are all on the action-packed to-do list when in Bishop. An eclectic events line-up complements the outdoor adventure quotient with rodeos, trout derbies, craft fairs, car shows and festivals.

And downtown invites strolling around to check out the art galleries and locally owned shops carrying everything from outdoor gear to crafts and clothing—many set in western style storefronts.
