Lily’s Legacy Senior Dog Sanctuary reports that, thanks to the kind generosity of lots of volunteers and supporters, 2017 has been a great year for the dogs in their care. When her owners split up, Deli lost her home. Luckily, she landed at Lily's Legacy Senior Dog Sanctuary in Petaluma, where her people-loving ways and playful nature have won her lots of friends. Don't be fooled by those white hairs—this 8-year-old Lab mix is healthy and happy, with plenty of energy for walks, runs, ball-chasing, and other fun. more »

Since we first checked in with Lily's Legacy Senior Dog Sanctuary last year, we're delighted to report that quite a few canine geezers have been lucky enough to benefit from the dedicated efforts of this group, inspired by the original Lily, a sweet, loving golden retriever. Founder Alice Mayn has gathered a growing community of hard-working volunteers whose skills encompass grant-writing, dog-walking, fostering, and putting together the annual Lily's Legacy Golf Tournament fundraiser.  As a result, elderly large-breed dogs (those 7 years or older and 50 pounds or larger), whose prospects are often bleak in the shelter system, have a safety net at Lily's Legacy, whether they find new adoptive homes or wind up as permanent residents at the sanctuary, usually due to medical issues.  more »

GoldensWhen Alice Mayn, a longtime foster for NorCal Golden Retriever Rescue, got word that a 12-year-old golden in ill health had been picked up wandering the streets of Santa Rosa, she rushed to the Sonoma County Animal Shelter to spring her.

Lily proved to be one of those life-changing dogs who basked in the affection of her human and canine family and returned the love many times over during the four short months she lived with Mayn and her family in Marin County. Inspired by Lily and her past experience fostering elderly goldens, Mayn decided to start a rescue in Lily's honor, dedicated to other large-breed senior dogs who found themselves abandoned or in need.

Founded in 2009, Lily's Legacy Senior Dog Sanctuary gives older dogs a safety net by either finding loving homes or caring for them for the rest of their lives. In the works: acquiring a rural property where dogs can be housed in safety and comfort as long as they need to be there.
