Ruhstaller Sacramento Taproom & Yard
630 K Street Basement
Local Phone: (530) 601-8240
Captain Frank Ruhstaller was California’s premier pioneer brewer from the late 1880s until Prohibition. More than a century later, the Ruhstaller brand has been revived by youthful entrepreneur J-E Paino and team, whose motto "We Grow Beer" is embodied in California-grown hops and barley cultivated by trusted farmers in the Sacramento region. Ruhstaller's downtown taproom has attracted a cult following, bringing a rustic-urban, underground aesthetic to what once was the basement of a JC Penney store. The speakeasy-style establishment is not identified with signage other than a sidewalk sandwich board outside the 7th Street entrance; look for the stenciled face of "Jimmy" (the brand's logo) and instructions to "ring bell for entry."
An outdoor taproom at the Ruhstaller hop yard, open during the warm weather months, is located just off Interstate 80 at the Kidwell Road exit in Dixon.
Both downtown and outdoor taprooms are dog-friendly.
The downtown taproom is theoretically open only by appointment, although in practice all who find it are welcome except at the busiest of times. Hours are Tuesday-Thursday 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., Friday-Saturday 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Sundays 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.
To make a reservation, please call 916-447-1881 or reserve by email.
Parking is available in nearby garages or on surface streets. The closest garage has an entrance on 7th Street between J and K, next to 24 Hour Fitness. Ruhstaller does not offer parking validation.
