Condé Nast and Sunset agree on Healdsburg

In Healdsburg, a woman in glasses and a white blouse kneels on the sidewalk, grinning at her small, fluffy dog. The dog wears a bright rainbow-striped sweater, its colors vivid against the warm tones of the setting sun. Behind them, trees and parked cars create a quaint scene.

Condé Nast Traveler called Healdsburg “one of the most alluring slices of California wine country” in its October 2024 write-up of the Best Cities in the United States. Meanwhile, Sunset just named this Sonoma County community one of the five wine growing regions every oenophile should visit. Set near the Dry Creek, Russian River and Alexander valleys, Healdsburg has plenty of dog-friendly tasting rooms plus parks, restaurants, hotels and pet shops to please all pups.

Wine brings many guests to Healdsburg, a scenic small town about 70 miles north of San Francisco. At Jeff Cohn Cellars, the Rhone Rovers Whine Club welcomes visiting dogs with water bowls and special treats. LIOCO Wine Company is among other tasting rooms with pup-friendly outdoor seating. Lots of restaurant patios accommodate four-legged guests, too, including those at Little Saint, Pizzando and Dry Creek Kitchen.

Healdsburg hotels happily roll out the red carpet for dogs. The modern H2Hotel greets pups with welcome amenities, while the luxurious Montage Healdsburg offers vineyard views. Cozy bed-and-breakfast properties like Grape Leaf Inn and Calderwood Inn promise Victorian charm. The Harmon Guest House accommodates well-behaved dogs weighing 50 pounds or less, and the Best Western Plus Dry Creek Inn has rooms with direct outdoor access. Please call ahead to confirm pet fees and guidelines, which vary by property.

Shops such as Fideaux, Debbie’s Pet Boutique and Your Pet’s Market carry treats and playful pet supplies. When it’s time to run, head to the fully fenced Villa Chanticleer Dog Park. It’s a 1.5-acre playground with water stations and shade trees. Off-leash options include Riverfront Regional Park and the 11-acre Badger Park.
