Gold Rush entrepreneur Sam Brannan founded Calistoga with the intent of harnessing its hot springs and making it the "Saratoga of California." In one of California history's most oft-quoted slips of the tongue, he famously uttered the words "Calistoga of Sarifornia" instead.
People still come here for the hot springs and mud baths, but we bet your pooch can find plenty of mud on his own. Might we suggest a winery visit instead? Family-owned Dutch Henry Winery on the scenic Silverado Trail is a favorite with four-legged travelers accompanied by people with a liking for earthy Napa Valley reds. Visitors are likely to be greeted by one of the establishment's resident Airedales, who are the inspiration behind Dutch Henry's Terrier Station Cabernet (OK, give the Grateful Dead some credit, too). Purchase a bottle or enjoy a tasting, then repair to the picnic grounds and bocce courts, where Rover can relax while you sip and bowl.
