Over the past year, our hiking pages and listings have become the most visited of all activities on DogTrekker.com.
In addition to the terrific hikes presented in this newsletter, we have some perennial favorites. Here are some great ways for you and your pup to put paws to the path in 2014:
Marin County Open Space District manages 34 preserves totaling 15,000 acres open to public recreation. At all but 10 of those well-behaved dogs under voice control can accompany you on fire prevention roads.
Also in Marin County, another 130 miles of trails are managed by the Marin Municipal Water District within the Mount Tamalpais watershed.
Four-legged hikers are welcome both on and off the pavement, but a “love ‘em and leash ‘em” policy is strictly enforced.
Crossing from the Marin Headlands into San Francisco and further south to San Mateo County is the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. While there are significant challenges ahead for dog owners on GGNRA lands, there are still many trails in this treasured resource for Bay Area dog owners.
Across the Bay, the East Bay Regional Park District spans Alameda and Contra Costa counties with more than 108,000 acres in 65 parks and 1,200 miles of trails.
Dogs must be leashed and under control at any posted area, parking lot, picnic site, lawn or developed area. Dogs may be off-leash in open space and undeveloped areas of parklands, provided they are under control at all times.
