Albany Bulb Beach

Berkeley, Albany, California 94706

Albany Bulb Beach, tucked behind the Golden Gate Fields racetrack along the Alameda County coast, is one of the few off-leash beaches in the Bay Area where dogs can actually run free and splash in the water. The location feels surprisingly wild for being so close to the racetrack—you get real Bay views and San Francisco skyline sightlines across the water. The beach itself changes dramatically with the tides, so checking a tide table before you go makes a real difference. At high tide the sandy area shrinks, but there’s still room for dogs to move around and get in the water. At low tide you get more beach to work with, plus access to tide pools and rocky areas that dogs find endlessly interesting.

Beyond the beach, Albany Bulb has a good network of trails and pathways worth exploring. The Neck—the pathway leading out to the Bulb—takes you through different landscapes: grassy sections, rocky outcroppings, and areas with public art installations scattered throughout. It’s engaging terrain for both dogs and people, and the views from various points along the route are genuinely nice. The walking is easy enough that you won’t feel exhausted, but there’s enough variety to keep things from getting boring.

The area is popular with dog owners, so you’ll likely see other dogs around, which some dogs love and others find overwhelming depending on their temperament. It’s worth noting that while the beach is off-leash, local regulations still apply, so stay aware of any seasonal restrictions or specific rules posted at the entrance. Pick up after your dog to keep the place in good condition for everyone else using it.

Bring water for both you and your dog since there’s not much shade out here and the Bay breezes can be deceptive about how much sun exposure you’re getting. Pack some dog snacks too if you’re planning to spend several hours exploring the trails. The combination of actual beach access, trail variety, and that rare off-leash freedom makes this worth the drive if you’re in the East Bay.
