Are you a beer-lover? This city has craft beer that will blow your socks off!

Sacramento may be situated in the heart of the Central Valley, but its strategic location at the confluence of the Sacramento and American rivers has made it a significant player in American history. This position was crucial during the 1849 Gold Rush, transforming Sacramento into a bustling waterfront boomtown. Today, this historic area is preserved as Old Sacramento, a charming district where visitors can step back in time and explore the remnants of the past, including saloons that once catered to the thirsty gold prospectors traveling to and from the Mother Lode.

Old Sacramento is a must-visit for history buffs and dog lovers alike. The area features wooden sidewalks, horse-drawn carriages, and plenty of dog-friendly spots. You and your furry friend can stroll along the waterfront, enjoy a scenic riverboat ride, or simply relax in one of the many open spaces. Several businesses in Old Sacramento welcome dogs, so you won’t have to leave your pet behind as you explore.

Beyond its gold rush legacy, Sacramento has another rich history: hops growing. The fertile soil and ideal climate of the Central Valley made Sacramento a leading center for hops production in the early 20th century, supplying breweries near and far. This booming industry was halted by Prohibition, but in recent years, Sacramento has experienced a remarkable craft beer renaissance. The region is now home to over 40 craft-beer producers, many of which have embraced the area’s hop-growing heritage.

Today, Sacramento’s craft beer scene is thriving, and it’s a paradise for dog owners who enjoy a good brew. Virtually all the local breweries feature dog-friendly taprooms, patios, and beer gardens. These establishments often provide water bowls, treats, and plenty of shade to keep your canine companion comfortable while you sample some of the best beers the region has to offer.

One of the pioneers of this movement is Ruhstaller, a brewery named after a Gold Rush-era brewer. Ruhstaller’s slogan, “we grow beer,” reflects their commitment to using locally grown hops. Their new basement taproom in downtown Sacramento offers a unique experience with 14 rotating taps, including small-batch R&D beers that you won’t find anywhere else. The atmosphere is casual and welcoming, making it a perfect spot for both well-behaved dogs and kids.

Another notable dog-friendly brewery is Track 7 Brewing Company, which has multiple locations throughout Sacramento. Known for their diverse and innovative beer selection, Track 7 often hosts dog-centric events and fundraisers, making it a popular spot for pet owners. Their spacious beer gardens are ideal for letting your dog stretch out and enjoy the day while you savor their craft creations.

Bike Dog Brewing Company is another gem in Sacramento’s craft beer crown. True to its name, Bike Dog Brewing embraces a dog-friendly ethos with open arms. Their West Sacramento and Broadway taprooms are popular gathering spots for dog lovers. The brewery even hosts “Doggie Sundays,” complete with treats for your furry friends and a relaxed vibe for humans.

For those who prefer a scenic outing, the American River Parkway offers a beautiful setting for a day of exploration. This extensive network of trails along the river is perfect for hiking, biking, and walking with your dog. Many of the trails lead to spots where you and your pet can cool off in the river, providing a refreshing break from the Californian heat.

Sacramento’s dog-friendly attitude extends beyond breweries and trails. Many local cafes, restaurants, and shops welcome pets, ensuring that your dog can join you for a meal or a shopping trip. The Midtown and Downtown areas are particularly dog-friendly, with numerous patios and outdoor spaces where dogs are not just allowed but celebrated.
