Fifty miles north of Eureka, Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park protects some of the North Coast‘s most dramatic scenery—sandy beaches, open meadows where Roosevelt elk graze in small herds, and lush canyon walls draped in ferns. The coast redwoods here are genuinely stunning, the kind of trees that make you stop walking and just look up. Your dog can experience a lot of this landscape with you, though there are real restrictions worth understanding before you go.

Dogs can roam on the beach and explore the campgrounds and parking areas on leash. The park has two main campground options: Elk Prairie and Gold Bluffs Beach. Elk Prairie sits closer to the old-growth forest and gives you that deep redwood experience right from your tent or RV site. Gold Bluffs Beach lives up to its name—dramatic sandy bluffs meet the Pacific, and it’s where you’ll get the most beach time with your dog. Both have basic facilities, and staying overnight lets you really soak in the quiet of the place rather than just passing through on a day trip.

The three scenic drives through the park are accessible with your dog since they follow roads where leashed dogs are permitted. This means you can see the elk herds and towering trees without having to hike the restricted trails. You’ll get good views without the frustration of being kept out entirely.

The catch is that Fern Canyon and all hiking trails are off-limits for dogs, which eliminates some of the park’s most popular walks. So realistically, your dog experience here centers on beach time and the campgrounds themselves, plus whatever you see from the car on those scenic drives. If beach camping and easy access to massive old-growth redwoods appeal to you more than serious hiking, this still works well. Just go in knowing your dog won’t be joining you on the interior trail system.
