Sunset Trail

5001 Northstar Dr., Truckee, California 96161

Hiking in and around Northstar Resort is a delightful way to spend your days immersed in the stunning natural beauty of the Sierra Nevada mountains. The area offers a range of dog-friendly hiking opportunities, making it an excellent destination for those traveling with their dogs. You can take a scenic gondola ride to the summit and hike down the mountain, or explore the picturesque trails that wind through the tranquil Martis Valley. With breathtaking views and diverse scenery, every step on these trails offers something memorable for both you and your dog.

The dog-friendly chair lifts provide access to various trailheads, where miles of tracks and loops await hikers of all abilities. To begin your journey, head to the Tahoe Zephyr chair lift and follow the signs to the Sunset Trailhead. This easy 0.60-mile trail traverses the West ridge of Mt. Pluto, offering spectacular views of the Pacific Crest and the back side of Northstar. Along the way, you and your dog will come across several informational vista points that provide insights into the Northstar Habitat Management Plan, Late Seral Forests, Riparian Wildlife Areas, and native bird species. It’s not just a hike; it’s an educational experience that deepens your appreciation for the environment you’re exploring.

Leashed dogs are welcome on all trails, so you can enjoy the adventure together without worry. As you meander through the pristine forests, you and your pup will be rewarded with stunning vistas of Lake Tahoe and the surrounding Sierra landscape. The trail itself is accessible enough that you won’t spend the whole time focused on footing, leaving plenty of opportunity to actually take in the views. Pack a lunch for a leisurely picnic amidst the towering trees and wildflowers, or simply rest at one of the vista points to catch your breath and let your dog recover from the hike. The elevation gain is minimal on the Sunset Trail, making it manageable even for dogs that aren’t seasoned hikers. The West ridge offers natural shading from the forest canopy during much of the walk, which helps keep both of you more comfortable on warmer days.
