Actress and animal advocate Doris Day celebrated her 88th birthday this year, and it will come as no surprise that her love of animals and highly practical commitment to their welfare in the Doris Day Animal Foundation, which turns 35 this year, is as strong as ever. (Or that Carmel's Cypress Inn, which she's co-owned for over two decades, remains legendary for its pet-friendly hospitality.) Indeed, this past spring she was helping out the SPCA for Monterey County with its annual telethon—and wound up adopting one of their foundlings.
The Doris Day Animal Foundation is celebrating a birthday of its own—its 35th—with another year of life-saving grants, from spay-neuter assistance to pet-food support for seniors via Meals on Wheels. Our friends at Muttville Senior Dog Rescue received a grant that enabled the free-of-charge adoption of 25 elderly canines by senior citizens. Peace of Mind Dog Rescue in Pacific Grove received a grant, too—and one of their dogs also came to live at the Day residence. Meanwhile, the Duffy Day Lifesaving Program continues to fund medical treatment for animals whose treatment is prohibitively expensive for the shelters in which they find themselves.
In November 2011, Miss Day released the My Heart album, her first in 17 years. Composed of unreleased tracks from the '80s, the CD is a fundraiser for DDAF. If you're looking for classic tunes for a very good cause, look no further!
