Pacific Grove, the picturesque community on the northern tip of the dog-friendly Monterey Peninsula, is cabin central for DogTrekkers who revel in coming back to a kitchen, a living area and maybe a fireplace after a brisk coastal stroll. Just bone-throwing distance from the rugged Pacific shoreline, a trio of 1940s- and ‘50s-era cottage motels renovated for today’s discerning guests provide an array of options so close to the water that you can hear the surf at night. Proximity to dog-friendly Asilomar Beach and a scenic shoreline trail make the location ideal for outdoorsy types and anyone traveling with pets.

Sea Breeze Inn & Cottages, two blocks from the ocean on Lighthouse Avenue, has private cabins, some with kitchens and fireplaces, perfect for an affordable weekend. Bide-A-Wee Inn & Cottages on Asilomar Avenue is another casual, reasonably priced choice for DogTrekkers, with some units featuring fireplaces, kitchens and more than one bedroom. Just down the road, Andril Fireplace Cottages is a luxury property that, as the name implies, consists of individual cottages with wood-burning fireplaces (firewood provided). Some have three, four, even five bedrooms, making them suitable for large families or groups of friends.

For something different, try cuddling up in the Cottage at Green Gates, a one-bedroom, Tudor-style guesthouse with kitchenette behind a private home near Asilomar Beach. A light breakfast is included in the rates, and there’s a lovely patio where you can soak up the sun while sipping your organic coffee with your dog curled at your feet.
