Emily, one of our Intrepid DogTrekkers from Humboldt County, wrote in about Pump Station #1 on the Mad River, just outside of Arcata. She says the Mad River pump stations are a fun and convenient place to take your dogs to roam off leash. There is a large field for them to romp in, short trails, lots of river access, and even a picnic area with fire pits.
Pump station #1 is located 4.5 miles north of Arcata in Humboldt County. If you want to GPS it, the Pump Station is at approximately 7506 West End Road, Arcata, Ca 95521. Take 101 North of Arcata to exit 299, 1st Exit then take a right at Guintoli Lane, and left at West End Road.
