From now to the end of October, our friends at the Marin Humane Society are working extra hard to find new homes for the dogs, cats, and other critters who come their way, and reunite lost ones with their families. The special effort comes because Marin Humane's the only Bay Area finalist in the ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge, and hoping to score some grant money by successfully placing lots of pets—at least 300 more than they did in the same time period last year.

Toward that goal, they've implemented the Name Your Own Adoption Fee program so cost doesn't get in the way of a beautiful friendship. And this weekend, October 27 and 28, the Fall Fee-Waived Adoptathon lets you take home your new family member free of charge (Marin residents still have to pay licensing fees).

Looking for a home at the moment is the fabulous Lacey. She's a 4-year-old bull terrier/pit bull mix in search of loving, active folks to shower with affection (as bull terriers in particular are fond of doing). On leash, she's got a bit of terrier snarkiness with other dogs, so a person prepared to help her fine-tune her manners would be ideal. She came to Marin Humane after being found wandering around the Marin Headlands, exhausted and injured; she's had several litters of puppies but is now spayed, officially retired from motherhood, and ready for good times with her human family.
