A vibrant dog park bathed in sunlight features abundant greenery with mature trees, offering ample shade for leisurely outdoor activities. In the distance is a well-equipped playground that presents an additional activity area. An inviting picnic table spreads out nearby, ideal for enjoying meals al fresco or taking relaxing breaks from play. A neatly-placed trash bin aids in maintaining the park's cleanliness for everyone's enjoyment. Dominating the scene is a generously wide dirt path gracefully curving through the expanse of grass, promising exploratory walks and lively fetch games.

DogTrekker readers love Sacramento’s parks and multi-use trails. The 32-mile American River Parkway might be the best known, and it’s also worth visiting the paths and playgrounds in and around downtown. Many are just blocks from restaurants that roll out the red carpet for pups. Book a stay at the Kimpton Sawyer Citizen hotel and discover a different side of California’s capital.

With no pet fees and no restrictions on size, weight or breed, the Kimpton Sawyer is among Sacramento’s most pup-friendly properties. The team here delivers water bowls to rooms and offers complimentary waste bags for use on daily walks. Four-legged guests can join their humans for the hotel’s evening wine reception. On select dates, a special pet package sweetens every stay with in-room breakfast plus a puppuccino and Sawyer-branded bandana for dogs.

Start your Sacramento day with a hearty Midtown Benedict at Crepeville, which has sidewalk seating on L Street. From there, it’s just three blocks to the 40-acre Capitol Park. Leash up the pup and follow the 1.1-mile Capitol Park Loop Trail to see stately buildings, historic monuments, colorful gardens and nearly 2,000 trees.

Sacramento’s “City of Trees” reputation is rooted in the oaks, elms and maples that fill urban forests. Many of those trees thrive in 15 off-leash dog parks found across the city. On Q Street, less than a mile from Capitol Park’s famed rose garden, Truitt Bark Park has canine-themed art and fenced play areas for pups of various sizes.

After playing fetch under sunny skies, swing by Der Biergarten for a late lunch or happy hour pint. Expect ample outside seating and water dishes for dogs. When it’s time for dinner, order Italian and French favorites on the pet-friendly patio at The Waterboy, a Midtown mainstay.
