Located in Midtown at 24th and K streets, Der Biergarten is Sacramento’s first and only authentic beer garden, and it’s one of the few places in the city where you can bring your dog and actually settle in for hours. The space itself is what catches you first — it used to be a vacant lot, and now it’s filled with those heavy wooden Biergarten tables imported directly from Germany. There’s something about sitting at a communal table with a cold beer that makes conversation happen naturally, whether you’re there with friends or meeting people at the next table over.
The beer list is solid, with 32 rotating drafts that lean heavily toward German styles and local craft breweries. The kitchen turns out legitimately good sausages sourced from one of Sacramento’s top German butchers, so you can actually eat real food here instead of just pretzels. The whole setup feels intentionally low-key — no TVs blaring, no dance floor, no manufactured noise. If you want entertainment, there’s cornhole and ping pong scattered around, which dogs don’t care about but you might enjoy between rounds of beer.
During the day it’s pretty manageable with a dog. You get sun, shade under umbrellas, and room to move around. Evenings and weekends are another story — the place gets legitimately crowded, and you’ll want to pick a quieter time if your dog isn’t comfortable with a packed patio and a lot of human chaos. If you do come when it’s busy, position yourself away from the high-traffic areas near the entrance. The communal table setup means there’s less personal space than a typical dog-friendly bar, so visibility and elbow room matter more when it’s packed.
