When the urge to brush sand out of your dog’s coat becomes irresistible, throw a towel and a dog brush in the car and take off to enjoy one of Marin’s dog-friendly beaches.
Be sure to watch for so-called “sneaker waves,” which occur predominantly in winter. The Coast Guard warns that beach-goers should pay attention to advisories, stay away from the beach when large waves are forecast, and never, ever turn their backs to the ocean. If your beloved pet does get caught in an undertow, don’t go after her. Chances are she’ll make it back on her own.
We’re partial, of course, to leash-optional strands like Bolinas, Dillon, Muir and Rodeo, where dogs under voice control can run free in designated areas. But don’t let the need for a tether deter you from visiting places like the dog-friendly part of Stinson Beach, which is also great for people-watching; or Limantour and Kehoe beaches at Point Reyes National Seashore, where civilization seems far, far away and your senses will be soothed by the rhythmic sounds of the sea.
Whichever beach you visit with your four-legged pal, remember to bring water for the two of you. Dog-friendly beaches in California are few and far between, so watch for and respect “no dogs” signs to help preserve existing privileges.
