Limantour Beach

Point Reyes National Seashore, Point Reyes Station, California 94956

(415) 464-5100

Limantour Beach sits within Point Reyes National Seashore near Marshall, a two-mile stretch of sand backed by Drakes Bay and an estuary that feels genuinely remote even though it’s easily accessible. Dogs are welcome on the southeast end as long as they stay leashed—the northwest section is off-limits because it’s a sanctuary for harbor seals and snowy plovers, and the park takes that protection seriously.

What makes this beach different from the typical California coastline is how much wildlife you’ll actually see. During fall migration, shorebirds blanket the wetlands. Winter brings ducks to the old freshwater ponds left over from the area’s ranching days. Harbor seals regularly bob offshore or haul out on rocks to sunbathe. If you time it right in spring, you might watch gray whales and calves moving along the coast—it happens close enough that you won’t need binoculars.

The beach itself is narrow and sandy, bordered by low bluffs. It’s quiet here. You won’t find the crowds you get at some Marin beaches, which means your dog can actually enjoy the space without constant stimulus from other dogs or people. The salty breeze and sound of waves are the main attractions, though the shorebird watching is genuinely excellent if that’s your thing.

The walk in is straightforward but not trivial—you’ll have a decent hike to reach the sand, so bring water for both you and your dog. The leash requirement is non-negotiable, so don’t plan on letting your dog run loose even on the designated dog section. If your dog isn’t comfortable in a wetland environment with lots of bird activity, they might get frustrated staying leashed while watching the wildlife. But if you’re looking for a quieter beach experience where you can actually observe what’s happening in a coastal ecosystem, and your dog enjoys a more contemplative pace, this works well. Pack a picnic and make an afternoon of it.
