Sleep it off

There’s nothing like a day in the outdoors—and especially the foggy outdoors—to make a hot shower and hotel room, even a simple one, feel like a million bucks. In Humboldt County, you won’t have to look hard or far to find an establishment that welcomes both you and your four-legged friend.

In the heart of the redwoods and on the Avenue of the Giants, Miranda Gardens Resort is a cluster of comfy cottages set about beautifully landscaped grounds studded with old-growth redwoods. A heated pool and free continental breakfast are perks in summer, but the resort is open year-round (this winter, stay two nights and get the third for half price).

In the moody, misty town of Eureka, the luxury Carter House Inns, an enclave of four Victorians perched alongside Humboldt Bay in the historic district, welcome dogs in guest rooms, if not in the renowned Restaurant 301. In summer, stroll over to the foot of the C Street Boardwalk and board the Madaket Ferry for an 8.5-mile, 75-minute, narrated cruise along the Eureka waterfront.

Elsewhere in Humboldt County, you’ll find dog-friendly lodging at many chain and privately owned properties ready to roll out the welcome mat for you and your best friend.
