It can be hard to find a place where you can legally cut that pesky umbilical cord, otherwise known as a leash, that ties you and your furry friend together. Pulgas Ridge Open Space Preserve in the hills above San Carlos and Redwood City is one location that really sets tails a-waggin'. Off-leash play is allowed in a 16-acre parcel of this 300-acre San Mateo County preserve that was once the site of a tuberculosis sanitarium. All the trails are dog-friendly, and on clear days you'll get a good view of the Santa Cruz Mountains. After you work up a pant, drop down into Redwood City and enjoy refreshment on the deck at the waterfront Diving Pelican Café, where the staff will be happy to keep Astro's water bowl filled as you enjoy your lunch.
