Which airlines allow large dogs in the cabin?

Most airlines have a firm rule: dogs over 20 pounds fly in the cargo hold or don’t fly at all. But a handful of carriers have quietly changed that, letting large dogs ride in the passenger cabin alongside their people. Here’s what we know about each option and what to expect.

JSX: the most accessible option

JSX operates semi-private flights out of private terminals — no security lines, no crowded gates — and allows dogs up to 79 pounds in the cabin for $100 per one-way segment. Small dogs that fit in an approved under-seat carrier travel the usual way. Larger dogs (still under 79 lbs) can purchase an adjacent seat: your dog lies on the floor in front of that seat for the duration of the flight. You’ll need a health certificate and rabies vaccination records, which vary by route, so confirm requirements when you book.

JSX caps pets at five per flight, so if you’re traveling during a busy stretch, book early. Routes cover California, Texas, Nevada, Arizona, and several other western states — making it the most practical choice for most California dog owners.

Bark Air: no weight limit, but bring your platinum card

Bark Air — from the makers of BarkBox — launched in 2024 with one mission: make air travel less miserable for dogs. There are no weight limits, no carriers required, and no cargo holds. Dogs settle beside their people on the cabin floor, boarding happens in dog-friendly order based on temperament, and flights carry roughly seven to nine dogs per plane.

The catch is the price: tickets run around $6,000 per booking (one human plus one dog, or two dogs under 50 lbs combined). That’s private-jet territory. Routes are still expanding. If your dog genuinely can’t tolerate cargo and cost isn’t the constraint, check their current schedule at air.bark.co.

Surf Air: membership-based, West Coast-centered

Surf Air is a private aviation membership service based in Los Angeles that allows dogs up to 100 pounds in the cabin. Dogs over 20 pounds require a purchased seat; under 20 pounds they ride free. Your dog stays leashed throughout and needs to stay out of exit rows.

Because Surf Air is membership-based, the per-dog cost is folded into how you use the membership rather than charged as a flat fee per flight. Give their team at least 48 hours’ notice (email animals@surfair.com) and have vaccination records ready. For frequent California travelers already on a Surf Air plan, it’s a seamless add-on.

Tradewind Aviation: charter, and pets fly free

Tradewind Aviation runs scheduled and on-demand charter flights, mostly in the northeastern US and Caribbean. Their pet policy is unusually generous: dogs of all sizes fly free, no carrier required (just leashed), and dogs over 100 lbs total can purchase an additional seat. The airline allows up to three pets per flight, with a max of two large pets (21 lbs and over) per party.

Routes are more limited for California-based travelers, but if your destination lines up, this is one of the most dog-forward commercial options in the country.

Before you book: questions to ask every time

  • What documentation is required? Health certificates often must be issued within 10 days of travel and signed by a licensed vet. Requirements vary by route.
  • Is there a per-flight pet cap? JSX limits the cabin to five pets total. Book early if your travel window is competitive.
  • Are there breed restrictions? Some carriers restrict brachycephalic breeds (bulldogs, pugs, boxers) regardless of size or weight.
  • Has the policy changed recently? Pet policies update frequently. Always confirm directly with the carrier before purchasing — not from a third-party review.
