Berkeley Humane is Here for You and Your Pets

“Walking through our shelter today was a bit emotional. It was quiet – a word probably never used before to describe our shelter,” says Jeffrey Zerwekh, Executive Director, Berkeley Humane.

“Except for the animals that were transported yesterday from a shelter an hour north of Sacramento, the kennels are empty. While this is something we would normally celebrate after a robust adoption weekend – today it brings about a bit of melancholy.”

Jeffrey assures us that while their population of dogs and cats are healthy, safe, and being well loved with their foster families, it’s still a big adjustment not to be able to scratch, rub, feed, play, and cuddle with all of them.

Berkeley Humane continues to transport animals who have been abandoned, neglected or need medical attention into their facilities, and their medical team is still performing urgent surgeries. They are also conducting adoptions by online appointments.

They are also currently providing the following three free services:

Free Behavior Advice Available – Experienced skilled trainers are responding to your calls and emails.

Free Pet Food Pantry – Providing thousands of pounds of pet food to families in need of additional support right now, so no one must choose between feeding themselves and feeding their pet. Last year, the Berkeley Humane distributed over 5,500 pounds of food – over the next few weeks they expect to distribute more than twice that amount.

Free Pet Loss Support Group – While much attention has been given to people who have been comforted by their pets during this crisis, others are grieving the recent loss of a beloved pet. Berkeley Humane is here to help because they know the enormous sadness of losing a pet.

While Jeffrey and the entire team at Berkeley Humane look forward to a time when everyone gets to hug and play more freely, they want to thank you for your support that allows them to provide the best care for the shelter animals in our community. Please help by donating now.
