Garrapata State Beach

Garrapata State Beach

Garrapata State Beach

Hwy. 1, Carmel, California

(831) 624-4909

Garrapata State Beach stretches two miles along the Carmel coast in Monterey County with dramatic cliffs, sandy shores, and rolling waves that create a striking backdrop for a day with your dog. The beach is part of the larger Garrapata State Park, and it’s the kind of place where painters and photographers show up to capture the light hitting the water.

One of the most compelling reasons to visit is the gray whale migration from January to March. You’ll walk along the shore with your leashed dog, the salty breeze hitting you both, and if you’re lucky you’ll see these massive creatures breach offshore. It’s genuinely memorable—not something you get tired of watching even after the tenth time.

The beach itself is dog-friendly as long as your dog stays leashed. The sandy terrain is easy to navigate, and most dogs will want to splash in the surf. The water here is cold even in summer, so don’t be surprised if your dog has a quick dip and wants back out. Restrooms and picnic areas are available, which means you can actually settle in for several hours without planning an exit strategy.

The landscape has limited natural shade, so bring something for yourself and your dog. The sun reflects hard off the sand and water here. Pack extra water for both of you—more than you think you’ll need. The beach doesn’t have a lot of trash cans, so whatever you bring, you’ll be carrying out again. This is worth the minor inconvenience because it keeps the place from feeling overrun.

The nearby trails inland from the beach are worth exploring if you want to hike, though the main draw is the water and coastline. On clear days you can see far down the coast. Parking is available at the entrance to the state park. The whole experience feels less developed than some other Monterey County beaches, which is exactly why people come here. It’s working, functioning shoreline rather than a processed attraction.
