McConnell Arboretum

840 Sundial Bridge (Auditorium) Dr., Redding, California 96001

The botanical gardens at McConnell Arboretum & Botanical Gardens sprawl across 20 dog-friendly acres in central Redding, offering genuine variety for a day out with your dog. You’ll find Mediterranean-climate display gardens with vibrant flowers and unusual plant species, a children’s garden, a medicinal garden, and two water features that break up the walking route naturally. The gardens are part of the larger Turtle Bay Exploration Park, which extends over 200 acres total and connects directly to the Sacramento River Trail—a paved 20-mile path that runs from Turtle Bay all the way to Shasta Dam. This setup means you can spend an hour in the gardens, then transition into a longer river walk if your dog’s energy level calls for it.

Walking through here, you notice the thoughtful integration of natural systems with human spaces. There’s real attention to how water moves through the landscape and how the gardens function ecologically, not just aesthetically. Dogs need to stay leashed, which keeps things manageable on the busy sections near the main entrance.

The admission is a suggested $5 donation per person, which goes toward maintenance. If the gardens inspire you, there’s a plant nursery at the west entrance open Wednesdays and Saturdays where you can pick up plants you’ve fallen for during your walk. It’s a nice touch—actually being able to take home something you’ve seen thriving there.

Bring water for both of you. The paved sections are shaded in places, but the gardens themselves offer minimal shade in the peak heat hours, and the river trail has even less. On a warm day, an early morning or late afternoon visit works better than midday. The landscape here feels substantial rather than cramped, so even if it gets moderately crowded on weekends, you’re not navigating tight paths with your dog constantly.
