Amir’s Garden is one of two distinctive picnic areas on the east side of Griffith Park, and it’s where you’ll find one of the most rewarding hike-in lunch spots in Los Angeles. Unlike the Old Zoo Picnic Area nearby—where you can eat surrounded by historic animal enclosures—Amir’s Garden offers a quieter experience in a volunteer-maintained sanctuary of flowering plants and trees.
The hike itself is manageable: about a mile round trip with 275 feet of elevation gain, which is enough to work up an appetite without exhausting you before you eat. The payoff is a cluster of picnic tables set among blooming gardens, making it feel genuinely secluded despite being inside the city. It’s the kind of place where you can spread out a sandwich and actually hear birds instead of traffic. Your dog will appreciate the shade from mature trees and the relatively mellow surroundings compared to busier park areas.
Getting there requires a bit of navigation but it’s straightforward once you know the route. From the 5 Freeway, take the Los Feliz Boulevard exit and head west to Crystal Springs Road, turning north. After about 1.5 miles, turn left onto Griffith Park Drive and continue for 1.2 miles until you reach Mineral Wells Road. Turn left and park along the road—the trailhead starts right there at the intersection, heading west toward the garden.
The drive-in portion gives you access to the parking area without needing a full day of hiking, and the garden itself maintains enough open space that you won’t feel cramped with other visitors, especially on weekday afternoons. Bring water and snacks to supplement whatever you pack, as there are no facilities once you’re on the trail.
