Anderson Lake County Park sits just outside Morgan Hill and covers 4,275 acres around Santa Clara County’s largest reservoir. It’s a genuinely big place with room to actually spread out, which makes it feel less crowded than some Bay Area parks even when other people are around.
The Coyote Creek Parkway trail system runs through the park and works well for dogs. These are multiple-use trails, so you’ll share space with cyclists and hikers, but the paths are wide enough that it doesn’t feel cramped. The terrain varies from flat sections along the water to hillier stretches depending on which route you take. Dogs can walk on the trails and in the open spaces throughout the park, and there’s genuine scenery — you’re looking at the lake, oak woodlands, and the surrounding ridgelines rather than just mowed grass.
The historic Jackson Ranch site is also worth checking out if you’re spending a few hours here. It’s a glimpse at what the area looked like decades ago and gives your walk some destination points rather than just looping endlessly.
Spring and early summer are particularly nice when the hills are still green and wildflowers are around. Summer gets hot, so early morning or late afternoon visits work better then. Fall and winter tend to be quieter, which some people prefer.
The park has picnic areas scattered throughout if you want to sit for a bit after walking. Parking is straightforward with several lots at different trailheads, so you’re not searching forever once you arrive. Bring water for your dog since the creek water isn’t really recommended for drinking, even though it’s visible from most trails. Visit the Santa Clara County Parks website for current trail conditions and any seasonal closures before heading out.
