Angel Falls

Bass Lake, Bass Lake, California 93604

Angel Falls is a dog-friendly hiking area located in Bass Lake, California, in the gateway region to Yosemite National Park. The trailhead sits in a scenic mountain area where you get real elevation and views that make the effort worthwhile. The hike itself winds through forest and opens up to the waterfall, which is most impressive in late spring and early summer when snowmelt keeps the water flowing strong.

I took my dog on this trail in early June and we saw families, groups of friends, and plenty of other dogs enjoying the same route. The path is well-marked and doesn’t have too many confusing junctions. There are some steep sections and rocky terrain, so it’s not ideal for very young dogs or those with joint issues, but most active dogs handle it fine. The whole thing takes a couple of hours depending on your pace and how long you linger at the waterfall.

Bass Lake itself is nearby if you want to combine activities — the lake area has some easier walking options around the shoreline if you want something less strenuous. The region has that classic Sierra Nevada feel with pine forests and granite outcrops. It’s popular enough that you won’t feel completely isolated, but it doesn’t feel crowded either, at least not on weekday visits.

The main thing to know is that conditions and pet policies can change seasonally, especially in a mountain area where weather and water levels shift. Snow can make the trail impassable in winter, and sometimes trail maintenance affects access. Because this is an outdoor area that depends on natural conditions and local management, it’s worth calling ahead to confirm current pet policies, any breed or size restrictions, and whether the trail is currently open and in good condition for hiking.
