The 1.5-mile trail winds through the Santa Lucia Wilderness portion of Los Padres National Forest, and it’s one of those hikes where the destination actually lives up to the effort. Big Falls plunges 80 feet year-round into a pool that becomes a legitimate swimming hole once summer arrives—the kind of place where your dog will want to splash around after the uphill walk. Two 40-foot cascades and several smaller waterfalls add to the scenery, though these flow seasonally depending on recent rainfall.
The real thing to know: both the trail and the dirt-road approach can turn into a muddy mess after a hard rain, so timing matters. In the rainy season, expect about a dozen stream crossings on the way in, and high water can actually close the road entirely. Call ahead if there’s been recent heavy rain. Leashed dogs are welcome on the trail, and the usual rule applies—pack out what you pack in.
Getting there takes some navigation. From Highway 101 in Arroyo Grande, take the Highway 227 exit (Grand Avenue) heading east toward Lopez Lake. After about 10 miles, before you actually reach Lopez Lake Recreation Area, bear right onto High Mountain Road. Less than a mile later, turn left onto Upper Lopez Canyon Road and follow it for 6.2 miles until the pavement ends. From there, it’s another 3.7 miles on dirt road to a small parking area at the trailhead. The drive isn’t quick, but it keeps the crowds down.
Bring water and start early if you’re going during warmer months—the shade coverage along the trail is sporadic, and your dog will appreciate reaching that pool. The muddy sections can be slippery on the way back down, so watch your footing and your dog’s, especially if they’re tired.
