Bighorn Overlook to Jack

Rancho Mirage, Rancho Mirage, California 92270

The Bighorn Overlook to Jack Rabbit Trail is a solid 1.4-mile loop in Rancho Mirage that gives you real views without requiring serious hiking chops. You start from the upper parking lot near City Hall and climb steadily through desert scrub and rock outcroppings. The trail is moderate in difficulty—nothing steep enough to be brutal, but enough elevation gain that you’ll feel like you actually did something.

What makes this hike work well with dogs is that it’s compact enough to finish before the heat really sets in, especially important in Riverside County where temperatures spike quickly. The trail itself is well-maintained and clearly marked, so you’re not bushwhacking or second-guessing the route. The panoramic views from the overlook section are legitimately good—you get sweeping desert landscape stretching out, and on clear days the vista opens up nicely.

The surface is mostly packed dirt and rock with some sandy patches. In summer this trail can get brutal midday, so an early morning start makes a real difference. Bring more water than you think you’ll need; there’s no water along the route and the sun exposure is constant. Dogs with sensitive pads might find the rocky sections a bit much, but most will handle it fine. The trail doesn’t have shade to speak of, so if your dog runs hot, this isn’t the day to push for the full loop.

Since you’re starting right near City Hall, parking is straightforward and you’re not dealing with the crowded trailhead situations you get at some desert spots. The hike moves quickly enough that you can knock it out in an hour or so, leaving time for breakfast in Rancho Mirage afterward. Spring and fall are ideal seasons here; winter is pleasant too, but summer requires serious heat management.
