Originally from San Diego’s beer scene, owner and brewer Drew Wallace moved to Mammoth Lakes over a decade ago and spent eight years perfecting his craft at home before opening Black Doubt Brewing Company. The nano-brewery operates in a compact 1200-square-foot space that manages to squeeze in both a tasting room and a 3.5 barrel brew house, which is genuinely impressive given what they’re producing in there.
The beer selection leans heavily into Belgian-style ales, sour beers, and hazy IPAs—styles you won’t find everywhere in Mammoth. What makes a visit worthwhile is their barrel-aged program. Drew and his assistant brewer Cam are constantly experimenting with aging beers in barrels, and seeing what they’ve managed to create in such tight quarters is part of the appeal. The beertending staff actually knows what they’re talking about, which matters when you’re tasting something unfamiliar.
The atmosphere is genuinely collaborative. They actively encourage feedback and adjust their rotation based on what people actually want to drink. If you come in with an idea for a beer style they should try, they’ll listen and might even have you back when it’s on tap. It’s the kind of place where you end up in a real conversation rather than just transacting a drink.
Dogs are welcome here, which makes it a solid spot if you’ve been hiking around Mammoth and want to decompress before heading back to your lodging. The tasting room is small enough that it has real character without feeling cramped, and you’re supporting a brewer who clearly cares about what’s in your glass. Stop by on an afternoon and ask what barrel-aged experiments are currently aging—that’s usually the most interesting part of their lineup.
