Sonoma County Regional Parks manages six public access trails throughout The Sea Ranch, a private community positioned along Highway 1 south of Gualala. These trails start from parking areas right off the highway and lead across bluff-top meadows and forests down to the dramatic coastline below. The Black Point Coastal Access Trail is the shortest of the bunch at just a quarter mile one way, making it an easy choice if you’re short on time or your dog isn’t up for a longer hike.
The walk itself is straightforward—you’re crossing open bluffs with good views the whole way, and the path is well-maintained. By the time you reach the end, you get a proper coastal vista with crashing waves directly below and that constant sea breeze in your face. It’s the kind of spot where you can actually hear the ocean working, not just see it from a distance. The bluff-top meadow setting means there’s not much shade, so timing your visit for cooler hours makes sense, especially on a warm day.
This is a legitimate dog-friendly trail with no restrictions mentioned, though the exposed bluffs mean your dog will need to stay under control since there are cliffs. The parking areas are small, so arriving early or on weekdays tends to work better if you want a guaranteed spot. Since The Sea Ranch is a gated community, these public access trails are your window into what’s otherwise private property, which makes them feel a bit more special than your average roadside pullout.
Check the Sonoma County Regional Parks website for current park hours and any seasonal closures before heading out, especially during winter storms when the bluffs can get slippery.
