Sonoma County Regional Parks manages the Bluff Top Sea Ranch Access Trail, one of six public access trails threading through The Sea Ranch, a private community just south of Gualala. This scenic 3-mile trail stretches along the headlands from Walk On Beach to Gualala Point Regional Park, and it’s one of the better coastal walks in Mendocino County if you want serious ocean views without the crowds.
The path meanders through bluff-top meadows and coastal forest, with the rugged shoreline visible for most of your walk. On a clear day, you can see for miles down the coast. The trail itself is well-maintained, and dogs are welcome here, which makes it a solid choice for getting your dog some real exercise while you’re exploring this part of the Sonoma coast. The terrain is mostly gentle, though there are sections with some elevation changes if you’re doing the full distance.
Parking areas line Highway 1 near the trailhead, so access is straightforward. The walk works well as a one-way hike if you can arrange a shuttle, or you can turn around at any point that suits you. Since it’s only 3 miles one way, many people do it as a half-day outing and combine it with exploring nearby Gualala Point or checking out the little downtown area in Gualala itself, which has a few dog-friendly spots.
The trail also provides access to the beach at lower tide, opening up opportunities for beachcombing and poking around tidepools if your dog enjoys that kind of exploration. The Sea Ranch’s private community setting keeps this trail quieter than many California coastal hikes, so it’s a genuinely peaceful walk. Just bring water—there’s no shade for stretches, and the ocean wind can dry you out faster than you’d expect.
